Why every aspiring startup hub needs a Mentor...
In his latest essay “Why Startup Hubs Work” Y-Combinator founder Paul Graham outlines three ways in which real startup hubs help startups fight their natural path towards failure: Environment, Chance and Numbers. In summary he says that if you have a place with enough startups what you get is social reinforcement for the startup process. You also get an increased “chance” of running...

Straw Planes or Why Mark Suster is The Most...
—- By challenging common messages that come out of the Valley, Mark Suster is adding more value to non-US startups than any other tech blogger in the world —- Many startup entrepreneurs do not realize that their world has been proselytized by a small group of men from the West Coast of the USA. The key figures in this “how to build a modern tech startup” movement are: - Michael...

RIP Derek Miller
Sad day today. I found out that Derek Miller, whose blog I’ve been keeping an eye on now for about 4 years for personal reasons, died of “complications from stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer” late last week. As an avid blogger, Derek organised to have a pre-written post published after his death. You can read that post here: http://www.penmachine.com/2011/05/the-last-post ...

Wow - only US$2.8M? Reported revenues of US$60M a year? Something sounds wrong there. On another note, wonder what Nigo’s new project will be once he leaves in 2 years.

Surfing and the Web (Part 2). An Interview with...
Before I stopped writing for The Next Web Australia, I embarked on a series called Surfing and the Web, which aimed to catch up with people involved in the Australian tech startup scene who are also surfers and ask them about Australia’s rich history in surfing and how that relates to our attempts to build a local startup culture. The first in the series was Rand Leeb du Toit (you can find it...

What were the 10 biggest wins for the Aussie tech...
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been wondering. How much progress has been made in 2010 for Aussie tech startups and out of that progress, what were the 10 biggest wins for the industry…i.e. the 10 things that have had the biggest effect on getting more Aussies working on tech startups and making those Aussie tech startups better than ever before. For instance, Atlassian’s $60M round would have...

Perception is Everything - Why we should thank...
So Paul Graham drops the following quote today “ Why is it that 90% of the stories we hear involving Australia and technology are about stupid moves by the government? Is there something unique about Australia?” Renai fired back but not too sure PG is listening and to be honest it probably doesn’t matter. When somebody who single-handedly changed the dynamic of startup...

Restaurant Reviews: Porteno
This is the first in a series of reviews I’m going to do on places I’ve checked into using Facebook Places. I figure if I tell you where I’ve been, I may as well tell you how it was. So here we go:   Porteno Set in what was, for as long as I can remember, “that Greek restuarant on Cleveland street” - Porteno is an Argentinian Parilla-style restaurant brought to you by the founders of...
