As the year comes to a close, I’ve been wondering.
How much progress has been made in 2010 for Aussie tech startups and out of that progress, what were the 10 biggest wins for the industry…i.e. the 10 things that have had the biggest effect on getting more Aussies working on tech startups and making those Aussie tech startups better than ever before.
For instance, Atlassian’s $60M round would have to rate a mention because of the company’s presence here and how they’ve drawn the attention of some leading VCs to the local market.
Tapulous’ sale to Disney might not get a run simply because the effect on the local scene has been minimal.
StartMate might be worth a mention, though its full effect will be felt in 2011
The Tjoos and RetailMeNot coupon site exits are great as the teams are both Aussie focused and in Tjoos case it frees up Bart and Kim to do more of their excellent community building work.
TNW AU bringing coverage of Melbourne’s startup scene to the rest of the world through the TNW network was a big one :)
Tim Bull and Alex Dong and BinaryPlex’songoing success which proves that StartupCamp, BootupCamp etc. are more than just a bit of fun, they’re actually bringing people together to create amazing startups.
There are no doubt many more, so let me know in the comments what you think were the biggest things to happen to the local tech startup scene in 2010 and I’ll pull a list together (cause we all love a list, right?)
